Oil Boom Town in West Kern County

Listings in Taft, CA

Welcome to Taft, a west Kern County oil town near the Midway-Sunset field, home to Taft College and the West Kern Oil Museum.

Taft is a city in western Kern County, California, located in the heart of the county's historic oil country southwest of Bakersfield. As of the most recent estimates, the city had a population of about 7,100, spread across a landscape of rolling hills, working oil fields, and residential streets that still carry the character of a boomtown that settled into a stable small city. Taft owes its existence and identity to petroleum. The surrounding Midway-Sunset Oil Field became one of the most productive fields in California, and Taft grew as a company town where drillers, tool dressers, and roustabouts settled with their families and developed new techniques for extraction. That legacy is celebrated at the West Kern Oil Museum, which preserves equipment, a historic wooden derrick, and a re-created 1930s boomtown, and at the Taft Oilworker Monument, unveiled in 2010 to honor the laborers who built the industry. The nearby Lakeview Gusher site recalls one of the most dramatic oil events in American history. Education has long been central to the city. Taft College, established in 1922, grew into a respected community college known for workforce training in energy, health care, and industrial technology, while the Taft City School District dates to 1909 and Taft Union High School serves the area's older students. A large private correctional institution, the Taft Correctional Institution, also operates south of town and contributes to the local economy. Taft functions today as a close-knit, family-oriented community with a sparse suburban feel. Most residents own their homes, parks are plentiful, and life moves at a pace tied to the rhythms of the oil fields and the surrounding ranch country. Its position roughly 40 minutes from Bakersfield gives residents access to a larger city while keeping them rooted in one of California's most distinctive industrial landscapes.

City Guide

About Taft

Real Estate & Housing

Taft's housing stock reflects its oil-boom origins and its later stabilization. The city contains a mix of older single-family homes built during its early twentieth-century growth, many of them modest frame and ranch houses on established residential streets, alongside mid-century construction and some newer homes on the city's edges. Most residents own their homes, and the overall feel is low-density and suburban rather than urban, with a number of parks and open lots woven through the street grid. Newer construction, including some recent subdivisions, has added to the supply around the periphery. Because Taft sits within reach of Bakersfield but retains small-town pricing, it tends to attract families, energy-industry workers, and buyers seeking a quieter alternative to the larger city, with lot sizes and home styles that reflect several generations of steady, unglamorous growth.

Neighborhoods

Taft is laid out on a simple grid of residential streets centered on its downtown corridor along Center Street and the surrounding blocks. The older neighborhoods near downtown contain the city's earliest homes, many built during the oil boom, and give the core of Taft a settled, historic feel. Residential areas extend outward in a low-density pattern, with schools and parks distributed among the blocks and newer homes appearing on the edges. The campus of Taft College occupies a central place in the community, and the Taft Correctional Institution sits south of town on Cadet Road. Beyond the city limits, the landscape transitions quickly to oil fields, ranch land, and the rolling hills of west Kern County, so that even central Taft neighborhoods retain a sense of openness and connection to the surrounding country.

Lifestyle in Taft

Life in Taft is family-centered and tied to the town's oil heritage. The city's identity as an oil community runs through its civic life, from the West Kern Oil Museum and the Oilworker Monument to the generations of families whose livelihoods connect to the energy industry. Taft College brings students, athletics, and workforce programs into daily life, while the high school's sports and activities anchor community pride. Residents enjoy a slow, suburban pace with a notable number of parks for a city its size, and most daily needs are met within town or on the drive to Bakersfield. The surrounding west Kern landscape offers open space, off-road recreation, and ranch country within minutes. It is a community where the practical, blue-collar character of its origins remains a point of pride rather than something left behind.

Schools & Education

Taft's public schools are organized around two main districts. The Taft City School District, established in 1909, serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade across the city's elementary and middle schools, and Taft Union High School serves the area's older students. The district is one of the older school systems in Kern County, founded to educate the children of the growing oil town. Higher education is anchored by Taft College, a community college established in 1922 that is known for its workforce-development programs in energy, health care, and industrial technology, as well as strong transfer pathways. The presence of both a long-established K-12 system and a respected community college makes Taft an educational hub for the surrounding west Kern region and a practical consideration for families relocating to the area.

Getting Around

Taft is reached primarily by State Route 119, which connects the city east to the Bakersfield area, and State Route 33, which runs north-south through west Kern County along the oil fields. Bakersfield, the region's principal city, lies roughly 40 minutes to the east and provides the nearest major employment, shopping, medical, and air services. Daily travel is overwhelmingly by private vehicle, consistent with the city's rural-suburban setting, and there is no rail or fixed-route transit serving Taft directly. The network of state and county roads also links the city to the surrounding oil fields and ranch lands that define the local economy. For commuters, the drive toward Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley is the central travel corridor, while the western hills and the Carrizo Plain offer recreation in the opposite direction.

Parks & Recreation

Recreation in Taft draws on the city's parks and its distinctive oil-country setting. The city maintains a notably large number of parks for its size, providing playgrounds, sports fields, and open space throughout its neighborhoods, and Taft College adds athletic facilities and events to the community. The West Kern Oil Museum offers a window into the region's petroleum history with its collection of pumps, trucks, a historic derrick, and a re-created 1930s boomtown, while the Oilworker Monument and the nearby Lakeview Gusher site tell the story of the area's oil boom. Beyond town, the open hills and ranch lands of west Kern County provide opportunities for hiking, hunting, off-road recreation, and access to the Carrizo Plain National Monument to the west. It is a recreation landscape shaped as much by the desert and oil country as by traditional suburban parks.
